Immortal Learning Rebecca Sklootââ¬â¢s The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks should be included as a work of summer reading for its model of literary merit and valuable entertainment. Sklootââ¬â¢s powerful message and use of literary devices should make her book common in a highââ¬âschool classroom. Unlike the labs who classified her as simply ââ¬Å"HeLaâ⬠, Skloot took the initiative to reveal who the woman of the immortal cells truly was. As stated by her daughter Deborah,ââ¬Å"[e]verything [is] always just about the cells and [people] donââ¬â¢t even worry about her name and [if] HeLa was even a personâ⬠(Skloot 52). In order to achieve her purpose of revealing the immortal life of not only the cells but the person, Skloot uses ethos, pathos, and logos within her research of the Lacks and scientific community, to write her book accurately and sufficiently. Skloot is able to justify her story based on years of research and interviews, which a student can mock to write a research paper (to note, at the end of the book Skloot has 21 pages of notes to validate all sources of information). A example of this is regarding the Lacks family who questioned, ââ¬Å"if our mother cells done so much for medicine, how come her family canââ¬â¢t afford to see no doctors?â⬠(9). Human Nature It is human nature to take the easy way when given a choice between an easy option and a difficult one. However, the easy way is not always the best way to grow and progress. Growth occurs when adversity is present, not when there is an absence of adversity and everything is easy. The Roman poet Horace observed, Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant. MARINE BIOLOGISTS Perhaps one of the most important administrations in the world is the Nation Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, more commonly referred to as the NOAA. It was established in 1970. There are 400 officers in the program and over 12,000 employees. This organization helps the career of Marine Biology and promotes its well being. Welcome to the wonderful world of Marine Biology. Marine Biology starts when there is pollution in the water and then they take samples of the water and sea weed, algae, microscopic organisms, fish, and large sea mammals. Then they examine them and try to analyze the cause of the pollution to the fullest extent and try to come up with a verdict on what the pollution is resulting from. Marine Biologists also warn us of dangerous weather such as hurricanes, floods and cyclones. Marine biology is also when the Biologists watch the animals reproduce and see if they can get other animals to reproduce and see what they can do with what happens. A Marine Biologist can make around $60,000 as an annual salary. In a typical day, they usually take their studies to the lab and do research on it. The involvement of science comes from the study of seaweed and its habitats and the fish, what they eat, where they go, and how they reproduce. They also look at the sea mammals and where they move, they also see how whales and other mammals reproduce. To be a Marine Biologist, you need a B.A. and a M.S. or you need 4 years of college, and you need to have experience or live by a large body of water. I would like to do it because I like the water. I am also good with animals, and I like marine animals such as whales and adore tropical fish. I would also enjoy working in labs with fish, seaweed, and sea mammals. I think it would be fun to have a whale and watch it reproduce, or to have an eel and a sting ray and watch them reproduce. I would also take two sorts of sea weed and try to make a different sort of sea weed. To be a Marine Biologist, you need to be smart and have to have some experience with the ocean or a body of water. It also takes a while to go through 4 years of college. Also you have to go through all the special courses required to be a Marine Biologist. The good thing is you get to go scuba diving and explore the oceans bottom, and you get to see all of the beautiful marine wildlife and fish. That is my report on what a Marine Biologist is. What they do in a typical day, what their salary is, what degree they need to be a Marine Biologist, how it is involved in science and why I would like to do it and why others would like to, too.

State Versus National Standards As you write lesson plans, you will need to refer to standards for your subject area. Standards are created to ensure that students from one classroom to another are taught the same basic information in a particular subject. While that concept might seem simple stated as such, it can, in fact, be much more complicated for the individual classroom teacher. State Standards The situation is further complicated by the periodic changes that occur to standards. When a particular curriculum area meets to change their standards, teachers are handed and expected to teach to a new group of standards from that point on. This can cause problems when drastic changes occur and teachers are still using textbooks based on the older standards. So why does this situation exist? The answer lies in flexibility and the desire for local control. States are able to determine what is important for their citizens and focus the curriculum accordingly. National Standards Will there ever be mandated national standards? At this time, it looks doubtful. Proponents claim that the curriculum would be standardized across the nation. However, the desire for local control is one of the foundational beliefs of the United States. An individual focus desired by the states would be virtually impossible with national standards. Getting Involved How can you get involved? On an individual level, just learning the state and any national standards will keep you informed of what is current in your field. You should join any organizations for your subject area such as the National Council for Teachers of English (NCTE). This will help you stay up-to-date as national standards are changed. In terms of your individual state, contact the state Department of Education to see if there is a way for you to become involved in reviews and changes to standards. He keeps avant-garde or art as more superior than kitsch. They are opposite sides according to Greenberg. He thinks that kitsch is much more like an Academic art. This gave a shape to the art and formed some rules to make the art something learnable. Many forms and ideas in contemporary poetry can be understood by analyzing this essay. For Clement, art includes two types: avant-garde and kitsch. Avant-garde takes the top position as a kind moving our society forward and it can be seen a genuine art. It focuses on the art itself and can make the common or minor, unimportant things a part of the art in artistic way. The avant-garde artists managing to do this, mostly are marginalized in modern world. However, even if kitsch has a characteristic of inauthenticity, modern society is more interested in kitsch. Kitsch doesnââ¬â¢t need the effort of readers or viewers while genuine art requires people to work hard and to be educated people to be able to acquire artistic ideas. The avant-garde is a product of Western bourgeois culture. It can be said that the capitalist and consumer society created avant-garde. It aimed to pursue art for its own sake but at the same time it couldnââ¬â¢t save itself from the money of bourgeois society. The avant-garde is both an academic and intellectual movement. Rather than being depended on history and tradition, it is about future and potential. Content is not significant, only the form of art itself is of importance. The avant-garde artist is not imitating or re-creating the world, but imitating and re-creating the form the art itself. The bacis principle in avant-garde is that instead of art that imitates life, art that imitates art. The avant-garde art requires a wealthy and educated audience. Kitsch is a product of the industrial revolution which urbanized the masses of Western Europe and America and established universal literacy. According to Greenberg, the kitsch arose to fill a demand for culture coming from the proletariat of industrial countries. It serves to lower class or middle class and that is it is easy to reach by everyone. It can be counted as a synthesis of culture and media. Kitsch is profitable, mechanical and has formulas. While avant-garde needs an educated class, kitsch doesnââ¬â¢t need such an audience to grasp the ideas. The avant garde imitates the process (and system) of art, and kitsch imitates its effect. Greenberg explains that socialism is the only movement that can support the avant- garde, or new culture. The avant-garde pushes its limits and so is producing new cultural value. Even kitsch is disposed to find new ideas in itself from time to time. While the avant-garde represents high culture, kitsch is the product of mass culture or popular culture and so it serves to common man. Some writers may look to do different things in terms of the structure of the work and the sequence of the sentences, while others working in poetry would create new forms and new ways of working. One of the key things about being avant-garde in literature is that it is all about breaking the existing rules about writing, and whether these are in poetry or in fictional writing, pushing the boundary and expressing themselves in a different way that doesnt conform to the existing rules is vital. The avant-garde has made writing an art form that is about more than just telling a story, but is actually about the form as much as the content. Although it can be an unique and individual way of expressing opinions and of working out new ideas, the changes in the format can also limit the audience for such work, and make it more difficult for people to access their work. James Joyce experimented with the medium of writing, and actually being successful in doing so, with landmark works such a s Ulysses he was a author of avant-garde. As well as Joyce, there are many poets who have also helped to push literature forward, and another of the biggest exponents of the avant-garde within literature is Jack Kerouac. If we give an example from world literature the most important example can be Franz Kafka. Other methods of audio alerts include audible textual appliances, continuous and voice evaluation. In some fire alarm systems especially in high-rise buildings, arenas and other large facilities such as hospitals where total evacuation is difficult to achieve, emergency voice alarm communication systems (EVACS) are used. This voice based system allows personnel to orderly evacuate and notify occupants in such crowded buildings. Strategically too, especially in high-rise buildings, depending on exact location of fire, different evaluation messages may be played on each floor to facilitate orderly evacuation and saving of lives (Jones, 2009). New codes and standards have enabled alarm system manufacturers to expand their systems voice evacuation capabilities to support trending requirements for mass notifications including possibility of multiple types of emergency messaging. Life Limiting Illness Essay
Sam (name changed to protect confidentiality) is a nine month old boy who was born at 26 weeks and diagnosed with chronic lung disease. He was sent home on 0.3 litres (L) of oxygen per minute with the view of gradually weaning this down as he grew stronger. When I joined the community nurse visiting Sam at home, he had been weaned down to 0.1L of oxygen per minute, so was now having his time on oxygen weaned down; from continuous oxygen eventually to none. The community nurses follow the trustââ¬â¢s nursing assessment guidelines which are based on The Twelve Activities of Daily Living (Roper et al, 1983). This model allows nurses to organise and prioritise care effectively for each individual child (McQuaid et al, 1996). As Sam was recovering from chronic lung disease, his respiratory well-being was the main priority. During the weaning process the community nurses conduct regular respiratory reviews to ensure Sam is coping with the lessening amount of oxygen. This assessment can begin as soon as the nurse enters the home. We were able to assess Samââ¬â¢s work of breathing by looking at him and listening to him. He was not exhibiting any signs of respiratory distress such as nasal flaring, recession, grunting or wheezing, all of which would tell us he was making excessive respiratory effort (Huband and Trigg, 2000). It is essential to monitor oxygen saturations and vital signs in a respiratory review. The pulse oximeter is used to alert nurses to potential hypoxaemia. It does this by emitting red and infrared light from the sensor into the patient. Oxygenated and deoxygenated blood absorb different amounts of infrared light, so an average value can be calculated to show the percentage saturation (Huband and Trigg, 2000). The nurse ensured Samââ¬â¢s foot was warm before attaching the probe to it, to determine if he had good peripheral perfusion. This is important for obtaining an accurate reading. The nurse informed Samââ¬â¢s parents that we would be happy with Sam saturating above 95%. He was sitting around 99-100%, which was a great sign. His respiration rate was within limits at 41. Sam was currently having 8 hours off oxygen per day and this review showed he was coping well. The pulse oximeter also recorded his heart rate at 124 beats per minute, he was peripherally warm to the touch, and he was pink and perfused, so there were no concerns with his circulation. Sam is bottle fed on demand. He was gaining weight and his mum reported he was feeding well 6-8 times a day. There were no concerns with his elimination as he passed urine and opened his bowels regularly. He had no history of pyrexia or hypothermia so it was not necessary to take his temperature. Sam lives at home with his mum and dad, the family appear happy and settled. Both parents seem to have bonded well with him. His mum is very good with him but is often keen to progress with Sam quicker than is advised by healthcare professionals. For example when Sam was having 3 hours off oxygen a day, his mum had disclosed she left him off for 5 hours, although this was against advice given. The nurseââ¬â¢s role is to reinforce the advice given without losing the good relationship with parents. Working in partnership with parents in the community after their children have been discharged involves handing control back to them, but this must be balanced with professional knowledge and expertise (Muller et al, 1992). Samââ¬â¢s mother also had a tendency to compare his development with other babies of his age, forgetting to correct his age for his prematurity. The nurse reminded her that Sam was doing very well considering he was 3 months premature. As I was playing with Sam I found him to be very alert and receptive. He interacted well with me, smiling and giggling at stimulations. After conducting a thorough respiratory review and discussing Samââ¬â¢s progress with his parents, the community nurse was able to advise them to advance him to 12 hours off oxygen a day. She informed Samââ¬â¢s parents that another overnight sleep study would need to be conducted in the next few weeks, so the consultant would be able to confirm he was still coping well. Huband. Growing up, I did not have a personal cell phone. The only technology in our house was a television, located in the living room. My parents were extremely strict and even put restrictions on the use of our television. Most of my time was spent reading books instead of using technology. I got my first cell phone, a flip phone, when I turned twelve years old. I was only allowed to use my phone during the day to make calls in case of an emergency and before going to bed, my parents would take it away from me.
